A Personal Portrait

Introducing Jess from Antrim, Northern Ireland. After contracting glandular fever during university, Jess developed M.E., a chronic illness that significantly altered her life. Alongside autoimmune diseases requiring strong immunosuppressive treatments, Jess has embraced a slower, more intentional life. Though her world is smaller, she finds joy in the little things—especially the companionship of her two lazy lurchers. Which Airinum product do you rely on the most?

I use the Urban Air Mask in all three available colors, and I love it! This reusable mask with replaceable KN95-certified filters for reliable protection not only looks great but fits me perfectly, with no air leaks, thanks to its adjustable ear loops and foam nose bridge. The included travel pouch is a thoughtful touch, keeping the mask clean and reducing germ transfer when it's not in use. Stylish, secure, and practical!

What inspired you to choose Airinum?

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was advised to shield due to my immunocompromised state, which made finding a proper protective mask a priority. Standard surgical masks or homemade cloth options didn’t fit well or provide adequate protection. I discovered Airinum on Instagram; their sleek design immediately appealed to me, along with their reusability and effective filtration. I wanted something I could rely on long-term—and four years later, they’ve more than proven their worth!

How has wearing Airinum masks supported you in managing your health and staying protected?

It wasn’t until I started masking up in 2020 that I realized how often I used to get sick—needlessly so! Now, being on multiple immunosuppressive treatments, avoiding respiratory illnesses is even more critical. Thanks largely to masking with Airinum, I’ve avoided getting sick. Their masks have truly been a lifesaver, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful. Moving forward, pandemic or not, I’ll continue to mask up to help protect myself and others from unnecessary illness.

Why and when do you choose to wear your Airinum mask(s)?

My Airinum masks are my trusted companions whenever I’m around people. I rely on them to help protect me during everyday activities, like district nurse home visits, hospital appointments, and treatments, as well as life’s more exciting moments—whether it’s catching a flight to visit a bestie or attending a Taylor Swift concert last summer. I always keep one in my handbag and a spare in the car, just in case!

What advice would you give to others with similar health challenges?

Living with a severe energy-limiting condition means I don’t go out often, but when I do, I take specific precautions to protect myself as much as possible. I try to go out during quieter times to reduce exposure, use a nasal spray, wear an Airinum Urban Air Mask, avoid touching my face, and sanitize my hands frequently. Once back home, I gargle with a CPC mouthwash. I also alternate between masks to allow them time to decontaminate, which is further supported by the Polygiene ViralOff technology integrated into the mask skin and the travel pouch.
